Today I had lunch at Mikano with my boss.
It took me back eight years to when I first arrived in Auckland and my boss first took me out lunch – also at Mikano.
With all the recent new arrivals to the Auckland dining scene, it occurred to me that we often overlook those quiet achievers who have been serving great food year in, year out.
Mikano is one such. The smoked trevally has been on the menu since my first visit and why change something so simply delicious?
Another long time stalwart is Cazador. A winemaking colleague remembers one of his earliest “dining out” experiences there with his parents. Today, under the trusty helmsmanship of younger generation Bex & Dariush the restaurant continues to go from strength to strength.
How many restaurants have that “this is where we…” emotional connection with their patrons? It is something most of the upstart Britomart crew can only dream of.
